What is mystery shopping? What is a mystery shopper?
Mystery Shopping - A market research tool that measures the quality of retail service. This tool can be used for the management and performance of goods and services.
Mystery Shoppers - Major brand companies hire individuals who pose as normal customers to evaluate the quality of service their companies and employees are offering the buying public. Shoppers are usually paid for their services and their purchases. Shoppers are given instructions which can include a script of behavior, questions that they may have to ask about a specific product or service, purchases to make and or observations. I have found in my own experience most companies have a training section that offer you virtual training on things they want you to look for when you visit the establishment in question. For example if they wanted to send you to xxxx123's Burger Joint (fastfood eatery) they may want you to observe things like "Was the driveway dirty or cluttered?" If there is a drive-up window "When driving up to the window was the attendant friendly and courteous?" If inside the restaurant "How long did you wait online?" Was the clerk/attendant wearing a uniform? Was she courteous? Did she serve you ontime?" By now you pretty much get the idea, right?
The example above ofcourse was at a local fastfood restaurant now let's take a look at other mystery shopping projects you may encounter:
At a clothing store- The company may alert you that there clothing store chains are running a sale they will supply you with all the information before hand and what you may have to do is go to the store eg: xxxx123's Bohemian Ragz and see if the sale is advertised everywhere in the store if it is visible to all. Is the store clean? Did anyone ask to be of assistance to you? Anything and everything or one specific thing may be asked of you. You may even have to purchase an item to present a receipt to the company if you indeed get the sale or not.
Those are just a few examples I have given you of what is to be expected as an assignment or project. I hope that was of some help to you now let's get to the mystery shops!
